چکیده

This paper presents symbolic time series analysis (STSA) of multi-dimensional measurement data for pattern identification in dynamical systems. The proposed methodology is built upon concepts derived from Information Theory and Automata Theory. The objective is not merely to classify the time series patterns but also to identify the variations therein. To achieve this goal, a symbol alphabet is constructed from raw data through partitioning of the data space. The maximum entropy method of partitioning is extended to multi-dimensional space. The resulting symbol sequences, generated from time series data, are used to model the dynamical information as finite state automata and the patterns are represented by the stationary state probability distributions. A novel procedure for determining the structure of the finite state automata, based on entropy rate, is introduced. The diversity among the observed patterns is quantified by a suitable measure. The efficacy of the STSA technique for pattern identification is demonstrated via laboratory experimentation on nonlinear systems. 2007 Pattern Recognition Society. Published by Elsevier Ltd. A Novel Method for Detection of Epilepsy in Short and Noisy EEG Signals Using Ordinal Pattern Analysis

Introduction: In this paper, a novel complexity measure is proposed to detect dynamical changes in nonlinear systems using ordinal pattern analysis of time series data taken from the system. Epilepsy is considered as a dynamical change in nonlinear and complex brain system. The ability of the proposed measure for characterizing the normal and epileptic EEG signals when the signal is short or is...

Symbolic time series analysis for anomaly detection: A comparative evaluation

Recent literature has reported a novel method for anomaly detection in complex dynamical systems, which relies on symbolic time series analysis and is built upon the principles of automata theory and pattern recognition. This paper compares the performance of this symbolic-dynamics-based method with that of other existing pattern recognition techniques from the perspectives of early detection o...

Identification of statistical patterns in complex systems via symbolic time series analysis.

Identification of statistical patterns from observed time series of spatially distributed sensor data is critical for performance monitoring and decision making in human-engineered complex systems, such as electric power generation, petrochemical, and networked transportation. This paper presents an information-theoretic approach to identification of statistical patterns in such systems, where ...

Symbolic dynamic analysis of complex systems for anomaly detection

This paper presents a novel concept of anomaly detection in complex dynamical systems using tools of Symbolic Dynamics, Finite State Automata, and Pattern Recognition, where time-series data of the observed variables on the fast time-scale are analyzed at slow time-scale epochs for early detection of (possible) anomalies. The concept of anomaly detection in dynamical systems is elucidated based...

Generalization of Hilbert transform for symbolic analysis of noisy signals

A recent publication has reported a Hilbert-transform-based partitioning method, called analytic signal space partitioning (ASSP), which essentially replaces wavelet space partitioning (WSP) for symbolic analysis of time series data in dynamical systems. When used in conjunction with D-Markov machines, also reported in the recent literature, ASSP provides a fast method of pattern recognition. H...
